Pencil was layered in criss-crosses before blending. Then the artist highlighted with a putty rubber.
The artist used a soft pencil (9b) which has a wide tonal range and blends easily.
Tonal accuracy is vital in realism, and depends in part on the smoothness of the paper (here, Bristol board).
