Detailed Pencil Drawing
For an in-depth pencil tutorial see Creating Pencil Portraits
Pencil is layered gradually in criss-crosses before blending, and highlights are picked out with a kneadable putty rubber.
The end effect is also facilitated by the softness of the pencil (9b) which has a wide tonal range and blends easily.
Tonal accuracy is vital in realism, and depends in part on the smoothness and brightness of the paper (here, Bristol board).
